The Web is always changing and evolving--new information is continually being added, new sites created, and new tools available. This is the spot for staying on top of this evolving world!
For several decades, low achievement among children and youth in
urban areas has been one of the most serious educational problems faced by
the
United States. Increasingly, the nation's cities are serving populations
of students that are primarily from families in which parents have little
education and who live in poverty.
Historically, low-income, disadvantaged children have entered schools behind their peers. The gap in achievement between these children and those from more economically advantaged backgrounds increases significantly during the elementary and secondary grades.
Over the past few years, a number of innovative strategies have been undertaken that have been successful in fostering school success among urban children and adolescents. These approaches typically have focused on strong parent involvement, on high expectations for students, on providing challenging learning activities, and on delivering integrated human services at or near school sites to address families' needs on a comprehensive basis.
What's New on the Net identifies resources, studies and reports on
the
Internet related to fostering success among disadvantaged students in urban
areas. The links include analyses of the underlying problems and present
promising approaches for addressing the needs of inner-city children and
youth.
