Suggested Activities

1. What most influences you to behave according to high ethical standards? In what ways can you help students set high behavioral and ethical standards for themselves?

2. Visit the Epals Classroom Exchange Web site (see Other Sites to Explore). Choose a grade level and subject area. Design a lesson plan that involves interaction with another classroom from Epals. How does your lesson foster healthy social development and cross-cultural understanding in students?

3. In your middle school classroom, you notice two students who are extremely withdrawn and do not easily trust others. Based on Erikson's stages of psychosocial development, what explanations can you give for these students' behavior? As a teacher, what can you do to involve them more fully in the classroom and help them experience success?

4. Increasing attention has been given to the role of schools in students' character and moral development. Visit one or more relevant Web sites such as http://www.character.com or http://www.charactercounts.org to find out what you can do to infuse ethics into core curriculum activities.

5. What are some examples of classroom conditions that contribute to students' high self-esteem? What can you do in your classroom to create an environment that fosters a healthy identity and personal growth for all students? (See Identity and Self-Esteem in Other Sites to Explore.)

6. Review the TIPS ON COMMUNICATIONS on page 89 of the text. Reflect on your middle and high school teachers. Briefly describe the characteristics of the teacher whom you most admired. In what ways did this teacher's behavior demonstrate high moral standards?

Focus on the Case Study

7. Review the stories of Angela and Bettie Ann in the Case Study. Based on Erikson's eight stages of psychosocial development, what explanations can you give for their behavior? What techniques would you suggest to their teacher for fostering the psychosocial development of these students?
