Suggested Activities

  1. What currently motivates you to learn? In your K-12 education experience, what motivated you as a student? What could have been done differently by the teachers or the school to create a consistently motivating learning environment?

  2. What questions do you have about how to motivate students and maintain high levels of student interest? Record your list of questions, and compare them to the questions on the Motivating Students Web site (http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~tep/tshooting/motivating.html). Review the motivation strategies suggested at this site. What other strategies can you think of?

  3. Visit the Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Web site at http://www.hcc.hawaii.edu/intranet/committees/FacDevCom/guidebk/teachtip/maslow.htm. In many schools with high poverty rates, students may have unmet physiological and safety needs. What can schools and teachers do to help these students meet their needs and experience high levels of academic success?

  4. Imagine that you have a student who appears to be unmotivated in all subject areas. What are some steps you would take to discover the source of this student's lack of motivation? How would you try to motivate this student in the future? (See Understanding the Keys to Motivation to Learn at http://www.mcrel.org/resources/noteworthy/barbaram.asp.)

  5. Visit the Motivating Students to Use Learning Technology Web site at http://www.icbl.hw.ac.uk/ltdi/implementing-it/motif.htm. Design a short lesson plan that utilizes e-mail, a computer software program, the Internet, or another kind of technology. In what ways do you think this activity will be motivating for your students?

    Focus on TIPS

  6. Review the TIPS ON MOTIVATION on page 354 of your text. To facilitate a learner's sense of competence, a teacher can give opportunities for student self-assessment and evaluation. Visit the Self-Evaluation Web site at http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/issues/methods/assment/as5selfe.htm and design a brief student self-assessment. Consider ways to utilize student portfolios, presentations, or exhibits. How do you think these assessment methods could foster student motivation?

    Focus on the Case Study

  7. How would knowledge of Maslow's theory (involving a hierarchy of needs) be helpful as Mark tries to foster Karim's motivation? How could the concepts of curiosity and interest, locus of control and attributions, and discovery learning be helpful to Mark? (See the Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs Web site at http://www.hcc.hawaii.edu/intranet/committees/FacDevCom/guidebk/teachtip/maslow.htm
and Understanding the Keys to Motivation to Learn Web site at http://www.mcrel.org/resources/noteworthy/barbaram.asp.)
