  1. If you asked students to develop their own set of classroom rules, what do you think they would suggest? Reflect on what your classroom rules would be. How do you think your rules would compare with a student-generated set of rules?
  2. In the Start Smart Web site, the first teacher uses "behavior contracts" to establish classroom rules and expectations. Write your own sample "behavior contract" using the tips in the article to help you.
  3. Think about your K-12 education experience, and focus on a teacher who effectively managed the classroom. Why do you think this teacher was so successful at managing the classroom? Which of the techniques discussed at the 11 Techniques for Better Classroom Discipline Web site did this teacher utilize? (See Other Sites to Explore.)
  4. Visit the Discipline Profiles Web site. (See Other Sites to Explore.) Which of the programs in the chart most closely matches your philosophy of classroom management and discipline? What do you think are the advantages of implementing this kind of program? Do you perceive any disadvantages to this approach?
  5. Educators can nurture student self-direction and personal efficacy by providing students with opportunities before, during, and after instruction to exercise control of their own learning (See Working Toward Student Self-Direction and Personal Efficacy as Educational Goals in Other Sites to Explore.) What are some examples of how you could give your students greater control before, during, and after instruction? How might these examples be adapted for younger (or older) children?

  6. Review the TIPS ON COMMUNICATION on page 393 of your text. Students respond well to teachers to give them a greater locus of control. What are some approaches you could use in your classroom that gives students responsibility and control over their own behavior? How could you design an activity in which students establish their own classroom rules?
