  1. Are you an effective test-taker? What kinds of tests do you complete most successfully? What kinds of tests are most effective in helping you retain the information you have learned? Analyze the assessment practices of teachers during your K-12 experience. In what ways do you think these practices fostered or inhibited your learning?
  2. There is increasing concern about fairness in testing for all students. Browse the McGraw-Hill Higher Education: Measurement and Evaluation Web resource library to find information about equity and fairness in testing. http://www.mhhe.com/socscience/education/edmeas/resources.html . What kinds of assessments do you think foster success among all students and fairly measure student achievement? Why do you think so?
  3. Explore the "An Alaskan Odyssey" link in the Assessment in Action Web site at http://www.nwrel.org/nwedu/fall_96/. The teacher in this article uses portfolio assessments to help students reflect on their progress over time. Choose a subject area and grade level and plan a brief outline of the items that you would ask students to preserve in their portfolios.
  4. Visit the NCREL: Assessment Web site at http://www.ncrel.org/sdrs/areas/as0cont.htm. Select one of the "Critical Issues" articles and reflect on the ways you would implement the suggestions for improving assessment practices in your classroom.
  5. As a classroom teacher, how could you help students improve their study and test-taking skills?   6. Review the TIPS ON COMMUNICATION on p. 463 of your text. Imagine that you are using portfolio assessment in your class, but one of your students rarely completes homework and does not take responsibility for preserving her work in her portfolio. Design a brief plan for involving this student's family in her work and assessment.

  7. Evaluate how well Melissa is assessing her students. Do you think her emphasis on performance-based and authentic assessments is appropriate for her students? Why or why not? What suggestions would you give to Melissa for improving her testing practices?
