Suggested Activities

  1. Intelligence is a complex and controversial construct. What is your definition of intelligence and what is the best way to measure it? Take an online intelligence test at a Web site such as IQ Tests http://www.davideck.com/links/IQ.html. Do you think this test accurately measures your intelligence? Why or why not?

  2. If you were designing an intelligence test, what would the focus be? What problems do you think you would encounter in your attempts to measure intelligence? Browse the Web for resources related to equity in testing. Use these resources to briefly outline an intelligence test that is equitable and fair to all students.

  3. Go to the Improving Classroom Assessment: A Toolkit for Professional Developers Web site at http://www.nwrel.org/eval/toolkit98/. Explore the Toolkit for guidelines about developing criteria for tests. Search for information about how to integrate assessments with classroom instruction effectively.

  4. Visit the Observable and Measurable Behaviors Web site http://para.unl.edu/ServedDocuments/Observation/lesson3.html. Make a list of possible observable and measurable behaviors you could see in your future students. Further test your understanding by participating in the online activity.

  5. Family involvement plays a vital role in students' academic performance and achievement. Design a plan for keeping families informed and involved in student testing. What kind of testing information would you provide to families and how would you communicate it to them?

    Focus on TIPS

  6. Review the TIPS ON ASSESSMENT on page 476 of your text. What do you think is the primary purpose of assessment? Imagine that the majority of your students received low scores on one of your tests. What does this mean to you? What are your next steps for improving student learning on this topic?

    Focus on the Case Study

  7. Why is Melissa dissatisfied with the emphasis her colleagues place on standardized test results? How might such tests be useful to Melissa?
