Suggested Activities

  1. Who were the most effective teachers during your K-12 education experience? Compile a list of teacher characteristics that contributed to their effectiveness. Compare your results to the list in the Effective Teachers Web site http://www.edc.gov.ab.ca/teaching/effective_teachers.asp.

  2. Select a curriculum subject area you plan to teach some day and choose a topic or unit in this area. Devise objectives for that topic or unit using The Taxonomy of Educational Objectives Web resource at http://www.humboldt.edu/~tha1/bloomtax.html. Are your objectives clear and focused? How could you increase the number of objectives reflecting the higher levels of the taxonomy?

  3. Suppose you are teaching a tenth-grade course in American Literature. Using Gagne's instructional design, identify nine instructional events that should occur during the teaching of the course. Create a plan or activity for implementing each of the events. Use the resources at the Instructional Design Theory Web site at http://tecfasun1.unige.ch/tecfa/research/CMC/FLISH95/slides_39.html for assistance.

  4. Explore the Classroom Connect Web site at http://www.classroomconnect.net/. Select one of the Web Quests, lesson plans, or other resources and design a plan for implementing it in your classroom. In what ways will your use of technology enhance student learning?

  5. What do you think are the positive and negative effects of homework? What will your policies be regarding homework when you are a teacher? Visit the Helping Your Students with Homework: A Guide for Teachers Web site to gain insight into assigning homework effectively http://www.ed.gov/pubs/HelpingStudents/.

    Focus on TIPS

  6. Review the TIPS ON LEARNING on page 526 of your text. An additional strategy for questioning students is to design questions that are open-ended and encourage multiple correct answers. Choose a curriculum subject area and write a list of questions about this topic. Do the questions encourage divergent thinking? How can the questions be improved?

    Focus on the Case Study

  7. What conflicts do there seem to be between Melissa's philosophy, goals, and objectives and those of the school? What impact do these differences have on Melissa's instructional planning and approach?
