Standardized Tests and Behavior Rating Scales

The use of standardized tests is integral to the educational purposes of the entire school system and should serve the needs of its students at all levels. A well-designed standardized testing program serves three purposes: instructional, guidance, and administrative. The norms that accompany standardized tests enable teachers, counselors, and other educators to interpret test scores by comparing them with the scores of other students. There are a wide range of standardized tests that can be used to measure cognitive and social progress in students, including: academic achievement, aptitude, intelligence, and behavior. The possible uses of standardized tests include student certification, special education placement, the testing of teachers, assessing the success of a school, and instructional assistance.
