Everywhere you turn, people are talking about the upcoming turn-of-the-century: the twenty-first century! The new millennium! It is inevitable that as educators we, too, must look to the future. Chapter 3 outlines current trends in education and their implications for the future. Some current issues in the future of education are:

  • Goals 2000
  • Increasing the length of school days or school years
  • Homeschools
  • Single-sex high schools
  • Technological advancements
  • Gender equity
  • Inclusion
  • Employment of female and minority administrators

    SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES

    1. Search for a chat room on the Web for parents of children with disabilities. Find out the parents' opinions of and experiences with inclusion

    2. Find the websites for your university. Look up the statistics on the percentage of university administrators who are women or minorities, and compare it to the percentage of students who are women or minorities. Are the proportions a fair representation of the student population?

    3. Explore the public and private school websites in your region. See if you can determine how technologically advanced each school is based upon its web page. Which communities have the best-prepared pages? Is this in relation to how technologically advanced they are?

    4. Find the website of one of the high schools that is housed in a shopping mall. How do they differ from traditionally-placed high schools?

    5. Email President Clinton your opinion regarding the ten goals in his Call to Action for American Education in the 21st Century.
