Chapter 1 Summary:

The Teaching Profession
Teachers are professionals, and anyone entering any profession is first taught, guided, and influenced by them. The desire to teach, to make a difference, crosses cultures, classes, and continents. All teachers in the United States must meet preparation and certification requirements. Once future teachers have met all necessary requirements, it is time to seek employment. Those wishing to teach must prepare themselves with resumes, portfolios, and references.
After finding employment, most teachers in the U.S. join either the National Education Association (NEA) or the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). Both associations work to promote quality education and positive, healthy learning and working environments for both teachers and students.
