Memories of a Special TeacherMrs. L. was the best teacher ever. She was my third grade teacher. I remember that she always wore her red hair tied up in a sort of beehive, and she always wore a lot of makeup too. She was flashy, but beautiful. Every student who passed through her classroom learned one great lesson. Credibility. We learned how to spell it, how to define it literally, and what it meant for each of us. We could never forget it. The best part about Mrs. L. was that she loved me. I think I dressed sort of funky because I was a child of the 80s, but she really appreciated my sense of style. Sometimes she would send me down the hall to see my second grade teacher, and we would take Polaroids to commemorate my eclectic fashion taste. Mrs. L. had a way to make each of her students feel special and appreciated. Although credibility is an important lesson, I learned even more important lessons that year. Loving and accepting yourself, celebrating your differences, and reveling in the reasons why you are unique are all subjects that Mrs. Later excelled in and taught to us with incredible grace. |
