Lead in Schools

December 2001

The American School Board Journal

A study has found that first and second graders who have moderate levels of lead in their systems were six times as likely to develop reading disabilities and seven times more likely to drop out of high school than children who were lead free. Interestingly enough, a CBS Investigation that aired on November 5, 2000, revealed that schools can be a source of lead poising. The investigation checked 50 schools, and concluded that 17 of them had tested positive for lead.
