Remember the Titans
Movie Review by:Erica Bender, Frederick Community College
"Remember the Titans" is a movie that I would recommend to every teacher, in every school, in any class. This is a movie that provides both inspiration and chilling a close-up look at the differences that separated our society not very long ago. This movie provides a variety of lessons that would be good for any class to see. It not only shows you all of the specific problems faced in this particular school and community, but it shows you what, if anything was done to overcome them.
From the very beginning, the town is outraged because their coach has been removed and replaced by a black coach when the school merger took place. We are shown the dislike between the families, coaches and players because of ethnicity and race. The players struggle to get along, and then are forced by their coach to do things that purposely involved them in each others lives.
As we are taken through the course of this story, we are kept on the edge of our seats through the good and the bad. At one point, everything seems to be falling in place quite nicely with a winning football team and an accepting community, when a twist is thrown in that will put you right back in your seat. The most interesting thing is that these events actually unfolded in real-life as they did in the movie, and it all feels too perfect of a Hollywood plot. We are quickly shown the frightening similarities between life and the big screen that we may not have seen before.
Not only are we taught lessons on acceptance of racial differences, but those of overcoming adversity in every aspect possible, as the movie is attacked with a variety of subplots, each with just as much importance and emotion as the other. Any viewer will see exactly what I mean as they try to hold back the tears during this epic and heart-wrenching true story.
