Remember the Titans

Remember the Titans is a great portrayal of how "In Virginia, high school football is a way of life." And in 1971, the integration of T. C. William's high school turns everyone's lives upside down. In a town struggling to adjust to the change, a football team must learn to put their differences aside and work together for their common goal of winning the state championship. As the white players struggle to listen and respect their new black head coach, the black athletes struggle to be taken seriously in a school that was at one time predominately white.

Throughout the film, the team learns they have more in common than they thought. Through spending countless hours in practice with each other they learn the only difference they have is the color of their skin. It is the teams attitude towards each other that changes a town's feelings about one another.

This film is an excellent way to discuss what it was like when integration first took place. It accurately portrays the attitudes of both the majors and the minors. To spark excellent discussions about racial tension and integration show this film to your students!
