Sarafina X
Movie Review by: Ashley Dasch, Frederick Community College
This movie is about an African American girl named Sarafina who lives in Soweto Africa. She lived with her aunt because her mother is a maid. Sarafina attends school where one of her teachers teaches the children “to be proud of who they are, and aware of the political forces that rule their lives.” They then go on making up songs about releasing Mandela (a political activist that was arrested.) This singing encourages the children and they start doing fire attacks on the people who are white in their town. The police are called in to control the battle. A lot of African Americans start protesting including Sarafina, which leads to her arrest. She is placed in a prison and is tortured for many years until they release her. She goes to visit her mom where she was a maid and they settled their differences.
I give this movie an A++. This was a great movie that had many diverse issues.
