In 1990, the then-president of South Africa, F. W. de Klerk,
released Mandela, and the government removed its ban on
the ANC. Within a year, apartheid had been dismantled. Of
all the oppressive laws that had once been in effect, none
were left. In 1993, Mandela and de Klerk was jointly awarded
the Nobel Peace Prize, and a year later Mandela became
president after a truly democratic election, which were long
overdue.
