The FreeWrit mail-list which is found at http://lists.asu.edu/archives/freewrit.html is one of the best places to ask questions about independent writing programs.  You can subscribe to the list by sending email to:  listserv@lists.asu.edu. Leave the subject line blank.  The message should be:  Subscribe FreeWrit <your name>

Every year at the Conference on College Composition and Communication there is a Special Interest Group for Independent Writing Units.  It's usually held on Thursday evening.  You can watch for it in your program or look for announcements on the FreeWrit mail-list.
