The Definition of WAC

My own definition, from the article “Writing across the Curriculum” (in Theorizing Composition: A Critical Sourcebook of Theory and Scholarship in Contemporary Composition Studies. Ed. Mary Lynch Kennedy. Westport, CN: Greenwood, 1998, pp. 356-364):

The term “writing across the curriculum” (WAC) usually refers to two related, but distinct phenomena. The first is writing as it is carried out and appears in diverse forms within the many disciplines that make up a school or college curriculum; the term “writing in the disciplines” (WID) is often applied to this phenomenon. The second is the organized effort to spread responsibility for teaching writing and critical thinking among those many disciplines… [The term] is still used to refer primarily to cross-disciplinary faculty development projects.  (p. 356)
