Voices - Where Do We Go From Here?

"[T]he United States should...formulate a military solution to what is, in larger terms, a military rather than a crimino- logical problem."
- Caleb Carr, 1986 <http://www.geocities.com/hollywood/boulevard/2739/carr.html>

"Fighting terrorism requires a police action and not an army action."
- Thomas L. Friedman, 2001 http://freshair.npr.org/dayFA.cfm?display=day&todayDate=09%2F19%2F2001

If the symbolic had not been [primary], the pilots of the hijacked planes would have aimed straight for a nuclear power plant, with which they could have wreaked still more horror... During World War Two, the intellectual challenge went out to physicists and chemists, mathematicians and engineers to solve technical problems of enormous complexity. If there really is to be something like a war on terrorism, then the new challenge seems to be addressed to anthropologists and historians, sociologists and theologians, students of the symbolic rather than the technical.
- Lorraine Daston <http://www.lrb.co.uk/v23/n19/mult2319.htm#daston>
