    acid – a sour substance found in Vitamin C and in many fruits and vegetables

    calcium – a mineral found in dairy products

    carbohydrates – nutrients that supply energy

    chemicals – minerals and vitamins

    dairy products – foods that come from milk

    dumplings – dough filled with meat, cheese, or vegetables

    iodine – a mineral associated with the thyroid gland

    iron – a mineral that helps form blood cells

    liver – an body organ that helps change substances found in the blood

    magnesium – a mineral found in fruits and whole-grain cereals

    minerals – chemicals such as iron, calcium, and sodium

    nutrients – chemicals found in food

    nutrition – the study of chemicals in food and how they help the body

    oyster – a shellfish often eaten as food by humans

    preserve – to keep fresh

    proteins – nutrients that build and repair body parts

    Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) – the amount of each vitamin and mineral a person needs each day to stay healthy

    sodium – a mineral that is important for muscle contractions and nerve messages

    squash – a yellow or green vegetable

    starches – carbohydrates

    tissues - muscles, bones, and skin

    vitamins – chemicals that help the body grow and stay healthy

    yogurt – a dairy product, often sweetened or flavored with fruit
