Chapter 5 Glossary

    autobiography – the story of an author’s own life

    blacksmith – a person who works with iron

    boycott – to refuse to buy something

    carpenter – a person who builds things

    colonial America – the time when Great Britain controlled the land (13 colonies) and the people living along the Atlantic Coast

    colony - a group of people living in a land ruled by another country

    exception – unlike the others in a group

    grievance – something people are angry about; a complaint

    independence – freedom

    intolerable – difficult to live with

    kidnap – to capture and take a person by force

    merchant – a person who sells goods

    middle class – the social class between the lower and upper classes; not poor, not rich

    pamphlets – short books without covers

    Patriot – a colonist who wanted independence from England; (patriot - a person who loves his/her country)

    plantation – a large farm

    protest – to speak or act against something that you disagree with

    repeal – to cancel

    representation – being a member of an organization

    retired – no longer working

    settler – a person who comes to live permanently in a new place

    slave – a person who is owned by another person

    smuggle – to secretly bring goods into a country to avoid paying taxes

    taxation – paying extra money when purchasing goods
