Communication, Cultures, Connections, Comparisons, and Community are the "Five Cs of Foreign Language Education" outlined in Standards for Foreign Language Learning: Preparing for the 21st Century (1996; National Standards in Foreign Language Education Project, a collaboration of ACTFL, AATG, AATF, and AATSP). With the Deutsch Na Klar approach, students communicate in German in meaningful contexts, and learn about and develop understanding of German-speaking cultures. Students are encouraged to see the connections between their German language study and other disciplines, and they make comparisons necessary to understand how language and culture are interrelated. In additional, they have many opportunities to relate to communities of German-speaking peoples through a variety of interactive resources, including the Internet.
