(rationalism). Stressing imagination, emotion, and sentiment, the movement emphasized
individual thought and action as well as human goodness and equality.
socialism
: A social, economic, and political theory based on collective ownership of
the means of production and distribution. These means are directed by the people or their
representatives for the good of society as a whole.
temperance
: The use of moderation in one's indulgences. In the context of the reform
movement, the abstinence from alcoholic drinks and ultimately the prohibition of these
beverages.
