This is the third edition of a U.S. survey text praised by adopters for its lively, engaging narrative style and its careful blending of political and social history. The authors believe that students will be drawn more readily to the study of history if they are presented with an engaging narrative of past events rather than with a mere encyclopedic compendium. The strong narrative approach helps students become engaged in the many human dramas that comprise our nation's history. The third edition is about 15 percent shorter in overall length. Its narrative has been streamlined, making it even more accessible.
"After the Fact: Historians Reconstruct the Past"—The text now has 6 of these features, each 4 pages long. Each essay highlights the process of DOING history. These essays are modeled after Davidson and Lytle's popular book "After the Fact: the Art of Historical Detection".
"Counterpoint" is a new feature addressing major questions of historical interpretation--one per chapter. This is a "mini-feature" that is integrated into the text, so students won't be tempted to skip it.
History of the West--Nation of Nations has always been strong in its coverage of western history. It has improved in this edition with a strongly updated Chapter 20.
Scholarship--This edition is updated throughout. The authors put particular focus on new research on environmental issues and Spanish speaking America
Package--This edition offers an exciting new package. New Audioguides are 10 minutes per chapter of audio discussion of key concepts by the authors. New maps--never seen in any other text. It also includes new software for the professor, Presentation Manager, consisting of maps, images, and other items of historical significance.
Global Essay--Each of the book's six parts begins with an essay setting American events in global context. Each essay features a time line comparing political and social events in the United States with developments elsewhere.
Pedagogy--Marginal headings throughout the entire text help students focus on key terms and concepts , while each chapter concludes with succinct summary and a timeline of significant events.
Daily Lives--This feature complements the core narrative. These essays focus on one of five themes that give insight into the lives of ordinary Americans: clothing and fashion; time and travel; food, drink, and drugs; public space/private space; and popular entertainment.
