  1. Describe early relations between and outline the objectives of the English colonists and the Powhatan confederacy.
  2. Explain the ways in which the introduction of staple crop economies--tobacco, sugar, and rice--transformed the societies of the Chesapeake, the Caribbean, and South Carolina.
  3. Explain why slavery became the dominant labor system in the southern colonies and compare the systems used by Chesapeake and Carolina planters.
  4. Explain the ways in which slavery and racism affected the social and political order of the Chesapeake, the Caribbean, and the Carolinas.
  5. Contrast Spanish settlements in the Southwest with the British colonies of the Southeast.
