5. Explain the rise of Jim Crow politics and discuss African American responses to it.

6. Explain why American imperialism can be described as indirect and list territorial acquisitions and other evidences of the growth of imperial influence.

7. Compare and contrast the foreign policy of the United States toward key areas of the world such as the Western Hemisphere, the Pacific Basin, and the Far East.

8. Explain why the United States went to war with Spain as part of its emergence as an imperial power.
