unconditioned response (UCR)
  A response that is natural and needs no training (e.g., salivation at the smell of food) (Ch. 6)
 
unconditioned stimulus (UCS)
  A stimulus that brings about a response without having been learned (Ch. 6)
 
unconscious
  A part of the personality of which a person is not aware, and which is a potential determinant of behavior (Ch. 14)
 
unconscious wish fulfillment theory
  Sigmund Freud’s theory that dreams represent unconscious wishes that dreamers desire to see fulfilled (Ch. 5)
 
universal grammar
  Noam Chomsky’s theory that all the world’s languages share a similar underlying structure (Ch. 8)
 
uplifts
  Minor positive events that make one feel good (Ch. 15)
