Browser - Software that allows the user to view files on the Internet in a user-friendly interface, often with graphics and other enhancements.
E-journal - A scholarly journal distributed electronically, often on the Web, or through a
mailing list.
E-mail - A way of transmitting messages across a phone line to a specified other person’s
computer
FAQ - Frequently Asked Question. Many mailing lists, newsgroups, and Web sites have answers to frequently asked questions newcomers are likely to ask.
FTP - File Transfer Protocol. Technology which allows the user to connect to a different
computer host and download files from it.
Gopher - Menu-driven application used to access Internet resources organized in hierarchical menus. Gopher is becoming obsolete as the Web gains popularity.
Home page - A Web site for an organization, company, university, or individual that is the
gateway to further pages.
HTML - Hypertext Markup Language. The programming language used to create pages
for the World Wide Web.
Internet - A global electronic web connecting over a million computers around the world by phone lines linked to servers and hosts in strategic places.
Internet Service Provider (ISP) - A company or organization that provides Internet access to customers through dial-up or direct connections.
Listserv - Software used to manage mailing lists.
Lurk - To read messages in a discussion forum without participating. This practice is
advisable when you first join a group.
Mailing List - A discussion format in which e-mail messages are sent to a central address, which then sends a copy to every subscriber to the list.
Majordomo - One of several kinds of software used to automate the maintenance of a
mailing list.
Modem - A piece of equipment that allows a computer to communicate with other computers through telephone lines, and thus to connect to the Internet.
Netiquette - The etiquette of the Internet.
Newsgroup - A discussion forum based on a distributed bulletin board system (Usenet
News).
Post - A message sent to a newsgroup or mailing list.
RAM - Random access memory. RAM functions like short-term memory in a computer, determining how much information can be displayed or manipulated at any one time.
Telnet - A protocol that allows a user to log on to another host computer at a distance
and run programs or access information.
Thread - A group of messages on the same topic in a discussion forum.
URL - Uniform Resource Locator, a standard format for identifying the location of
information on the World Wide Web.
Usenet - The system of distributed bulletin boards called newsgroups.
World Wide Web - A hypertext, hypermedia-based information retrieval system designed to offer a user-friendly graphical interface with the Internet.
