Describes requirements for admissions and degrees, tuition, and financial aid at over 600 departments of psychology. Includes extensive lists of specialties and types of degrees offered. Updated yearly. Washington, DC: American Psychological Association.

Gardner, H. (1985). The mind’s new science. New York: Basic Books. Describes the birth of cognitive psychology in the late 1950s and follows its progress through the next twenty-five years, as it became a dominant paradigm in psychology.

Hilgard, E. R., Leary, D. E., & McGuire, G. R. (1991). The history of psychology: A survey and critical assessment. In M. R. Rosenzweig & L. W. Porter (Eds.). Annual review of psychology, Vol. 42. pp. 79–107. Palo Alto, CA: Annual Reviews, Inc. Not a conventional history, but rather a “history of the history of psychology.” The authors review influential historians and their works, but also provide a useful overview of the historical resources available for students and instructors.

Leahey, T. H. (1994). A history of modern psychology (2nd ed.). Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall, Inc. A good review of the most important figures and ideas of psychology.

Rubinstein, J., & Slife, B. D. (1992). Taking sides: Views on controversial psychological issues (7th ed.). Guilford, CT: Dushkin. Presents both sides of controversial issues through the words of the actual researchers.

Woods, P. J. (Ed). (1988). Is psychology for them? A guide to undergraduate advising. Washington, DC: American Psychological Association. Intended for professors and others who often advise students about majors and careers in psychology, but equally useful for students. Offers guidance in deciding whether to major in psychology. Describes careers available to psychologists and offers advice on finding a job.
