  1. Define developmental psychology, and identify the three primary areas of interest for developmental psychologists.
  2. Discuss the relative contributions of heredity and environment in human development, and explain how they are involved during critical periods.
  3. Explain how Sigmund Freud, John B. Watson, and Jean Piaget have influenced psychologists’ views of development.
  4. Describe the perceptual capabilities of a newborn.
  5. Describe the newborn’s reflexes.
  6. Define childhood amnesia, and discuss its possible causes.
  7. Describe cognitive development during infancy, the preschool period, and middle childhood. Compare and contrast Piaget’s stage theory of development with the information-processing perspective. 8. Explain how Case’s Integrative theory synthesizes Piaget’s stage theory and the information processing perspective.
  8. Describe the stages of language acquisition in young children, and list the ages at which various linguistic milestones are usually observed.
  9. Discuss the three perspectives on language acquisition.
  10. Explain how strategies for memory and metacognition are related to memory development.
  11. Describe the cognitive skills that are mastered in adolescence. 13. Discuss the cognitive changes that occur in adulthood, and identify the cognitive impairments, if any, associated with aging.
  12. Discuss the nature-nurture debate regarding language acquisition, using the case of Genie as an example.
