Flavel, J. H., Miller, P. H., & Miller, S. A. (1993). Cognitive development (3rd ed.). Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall. One of the best reviews of the field, written in a style befitting the subject without eliminating the inherent interest in the material.

Kail, R. (1990). The development of memory in children. New York: Freeman. A comprehensive but accessible account of childhood memory.

Pinker, S. (1994). The language instinct: The new science of language and the mind. New York: The Penguin Press. A marvelously written book, outlining Pinker’s somewhat controversial views on language acquisition.

Rymer, R. (1993). Genie: Escape from a silent childhood. New York: Viking Penguin. A captivating book that presents the case of Genie in detail and also examines how she was treated by those who studied her. Rymer’s frank approach to the subject raises important questions.
