Learning Objectives

  1. Compare and contrast the following theories of social and personality development: Freudian theory, Eriksonian theory, social learning theory, cognitive development theory, and biological theory.
  2. List and describe Erikson’s eight stages of development.
  3. Describe the basic interactions between adults and infants, and discuss the relative contribution of heredity and environment to the child’s temperament.
  4. Define “secure” and “insecure” attachment, and discuss the factors involved in the process of attachment.
  5. Describe three different parenting styles, and discuss the likely outcomes for children raised in each.
  6. Discuss the impact of child abuse and divorce on the developing child.
  7. Discuss the relationship between heredity and environment in the long-term development of the personality.
  8. Discuss gender role development from the biological, Freudian, social learning, and cognitive development perspectives.
  9. Describe moral development from the Freudian, social learning, and cognitive development perspectives. In particular, discuss Kohlberg’s theory and possible criticisms of it.
  10. Describe the physical and psychological changes observed in puberty.
  11. Discuss the concept of an identity crisis in adolescence, and evaluate its long-term impact.
  12. Describe the research on social and personality development in adulthood, including the stability of the adult personality.
  13. Discuss the impact of day care on the developing child.
