Damasio, A. R. (1994). Descartes’ error: Emotion, reason, and the human brain. New York: G. P. Putnam. A fascinating look at the complex link between emotion and cognition; Damasio presents a convincing cases that regardless of our attempts to make rational decisions, reason may always be influenced by emotional involvement.

Ekman, P. (1985). Telling lies: Clues to deceit in the marketplace, politics, and marriage. New York: Norton. Written for the popular audience, a summary of the author’s many years of research on facial expressions. Through many examples and illustrations, the author instructs the reader in how to distinguish felt from false emotions through facial expressions. There is also an excellent chapter on lie detection through polygraph techniques.

Geen, R. G. (1995). Human motivation: A social psychological approach. San Diego: Brooks-Cole. An easy-to-read introduction to motivation; especially useful as a adjunct to more traditional approaches based on Hullian theory.

Kavanaugh, R. D., Zimmerberg, B., & Fein, S. (1996). Emotion: Interdisciplinary perspectives. Hillsdale, NJ: Erlbaum. An interesting collection of essays on emotion, from a number of different perspectives: neuroscience, social psychology, clinical psychology, and development.

Siegman, A. W., & Smith, T. W. (Eds.) (1994). Anger, hostility, and the heart. Hillsdale, NJ: Erlbaum. A recent look at the factors underlying coronary heart disease, anger, and “Type A” personality.
