Brannon, L., & Feist, J. (1997). Health psychology: An introduction to behavior and health (2nd ed.). Belmont, CA: Wadsworth. One of the best introductory books on the topic of health psychology.
King, B. M. (1996). Human sexuality today (2nd ed.). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice-Hall. A recent, readable introduction to sexuality, including a good section on sexually transmitted diseases.
Pryor, J. B., & Reeder, G. D. (Eds.) (1993). The social psychology of HIV infection. Hillsdale, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum. An advanced, edited volume containing chapters by several highly regarded researchers in sexuality, health, and social psychology.
Shapiro, A. P. (1996). Hypertension and stress: A unified concept. Hillsdale, NJ: Lawrence Erlbaum. A recent work summarizing the current research on stress and cardiovascular functioning, including discussion of life-style and personality factors.
Taylor, S. E. (1989). Positive illusions. New York: Basic Books. In this book, Taylor presents research illustrating that illusions may be important in maintaining physical and mental health. This view is intriguing because it runs counter to the popular belief that distorted perceptions of reality are a sign of mental illness. Taylor shows that in many situations, such distortions are adaptive and necessary.
Cousins, N. (1979). Anatomy of an illness as perceived by the patient: Reflections on healing and regeneration. New York: Norton.
Sacks, O. (1984). A leg to stand on. New York: Summit Books. Two marvelous firsthand accounts of battles against illness and injury. Cousins discusses his recovery and how he found laughter (including Three Stooges films!) to be an invaluable aid to recovery. Sacks discusses recovery from injury rather than illness, but his explorations of the depression, boredom, and fear involved in his lengthy convalescence make for compelling reading.
