Suggested Readings

Allen, B. P. (1997). Personality theories: Development, growth, and diversity (2nd ed.). Needham Heights, MA: Allyn & Bacon. A good introduction to personality theory.

Buss, D., & Cantor, N. (1989). Personality psychology: Recent trends and emerging directions. New York: Springer-Verlag. Not an introductory text but a collection of chapters by active, contemporary personality psychologists, expressing their views of important and emerging issues in personality psychology.

Gay, P. (1989). Freud: A life for our time. New York: Anchor Books. A remarkably thorough biography of Sigmund Freud. Contemporary Freudian theory is much easier to comprehend after learning the circumstances of Freud’s fascinating and unusual life.

Hjelle, L. A., & Ziegler, D. J. (1992). Personality theories: Basic assumptions, research and applications (3rd ed.). New York: McGraw-Hill. An introductory look at personality, with particular attention to the sometimes hidden assumptions of each theoretical viewpoint.
