Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the criteria that are generally used in defining a psychological disorder.
  2. Identify the general cause of psychological disorders according to each of the following perspectives: biological, psychoanalytic, learning, cognitive, interpersonal, and sociocultural.
  3. Describe DSM-IV, the method of classification used by most psychologists and psychiatrists, and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of such a system.
  4. Define anxiety disorder, and distinguish among panic disorder, the phobic disorders, generalized anxiety disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder.
  5. Discuss the various theoretical explanations for the anxiety disorders.
  6. Define somatoform disorder, distinguish between hypochondriasis and conversion disorder, and discuss the theoretical explanations for the somatoform disorders.
  7. Define dissociative disorder, distinguish among dissociative amnesia, dissociative fugue, and dissociative identity disorder, and discuss the theoretical explanations for the dissociative disorders.
  8. Define mood disorder, distinguish among major depressive disorder, dysthymia, bipolar disorder, and cyclothymia, and explain the relationship between mood disorders and suicide.
  9. Discuss the various theoretical explanations for mood disorders.
  10. Define schizophrenia, list its symptoms, and distinguish among disorganized schizophrenia, catatonic schizophrenia, paranoid schizophrenia, and undifferentiated schizophrenia.
  11. Discuss the various theoretical explanations for schizophrenia.
  12. Define personality disorder, and distinguish among antisocial personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder, and borderline personality disorder.
  13. Discuss the possible causes of personality disorders.
  14. Define substance-related disorder, and discuss the various theoretical explanations for it, using alcoholism as an example.
  15. Describe the learned helplessness model of depression, and explain why it may be an improvement over other models of depression.
