Gottesman, I. I. (1991). Schizophrenia genesis: The origins of madness. New York: Freeman. The author reviews current research on schizophrenia, with a focus on the genetic and environmental factors implicated in its onset and course. He discusses the issues and controversies associated with diagnosis of the disorder as well as ethical issues pertaining to genetic counseling and national policies.

Maris, R. W., Berman, A. L., Maltsberger, J. T., & Yufit, R. I. (Eds.) (1990). Assessment and prediction of suicide. New York: Guilford Press. A comprehensive survey of suicide, with particular emphasis on the identification of those at greatest risk.

Prochaska, J. O. (1984). Systems of psychotherapy: A transtheoretical analysis (2nd ed.). Homewood, IL: Dorsey Press. This book describes one case (an obsessive-compulsive woman) through twelve different theoretical approaches. It is interesting, vivid, and engaging.

Seligman, M. E. P. (1991). Learned optimism. New York: Knopf. This lively and engaging book blends science with practical advice on how people can modify pessimistic ways of thinking that can hold them back and detract from their quality of life.

Spitzer, R. L., Skodol, A. E., Gibbon, M., & Williams, J. B. W. (1986). A psychiatrist’s casebook. New York: Warner Books. This collection of case studies gives examples of most major psychological disorders. The discussion of each case includes diagnostic criteria and recommended forms of therapy.

Styron, W. (1990). Darkness visible: A great writer’s battle with depression. New York: Random House. In this book, the author provides a moving account of the agonies he experienced in his struggle to overcome depression.

Sutker, P. B. & Adams, H. E. (Eds.) (1993). Comprehensive handbook of psychopathology (2nd ed.). New York: Plenum Press. An advanced text dealing with psychological disorders, written by leading researchers in each area. The chapter on dissociative disorders written by Kihlstrom, Tataryn, and Hoyt is particularly noteworthy.
