  1. Define psychotherapy, and discuss the training typical of the professionals who practice psychotherapy.
  2. Describe the goals and techniques of psychoanalytic therapy and discuss its effectiveness.
  3. Describe the basic goals and tenets of the humanistic therapies, and distinguish between client-centered and Gestalt therapy.
  4. Describe the various types of behavioral and cognitive therapy.
  5. Describe the five most common types of family-systems therapy.
  6. Describe various types of group therapy, and identify the situations in which group therapy might be most useful.
  7. Discuss the use of psychosurgery and electroconvulsive therapy in contemporary practice.
  8. Distinguish among the psychoactive drugs used in the treatment of anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia, and explain why the newer drugs represent an improvement over older drugs.
  9. Evaluate the effectiveness of the various forms of psychotherapy and biological therapy.
  10. Review the risk factors associated with suicide, and describe the psychotherapies used in the treatment of those who are suicidal.
