Chapter 16 - Psychological Treatments

Suggested Readings

Beck, A. T., & Emery, G. (1985). Anxiety disorders and phobias: A cognitive perspective. New York: Basic Books. The authors discuss how the principles of cognitive therapy may be successfully applied to anxiety disorders such as panic disorder, agoraphobia, social anxiety, and phobias. They also present a broad overview of the components of cognitive therapy.

Bender, K. J. (1990). Psychiatric medications. Newbury Park, CA: Sage. This book provides information on the use of medication for psychological problems. It describes when medications are indicated, the mechanisms of drug actions, side effects, dosage levels, and generic and brand names.

Ivey, A. E., Ivey, M. B., & Simek-Morgan, L. (1997). Counseling and psychotherapy: A multicultural perspective (4th ed). Needham Heights, MA: Allyn & Bacon. The most recent edition of a solid introduction to psychotherapy and counseling, written from a multicultural framework.

Kramer, P. D. (1993). Listening to Prozac. New York: Viking. Written for a mass market audience, Kramer (a psychiatrist in private practice) discusses the impact of Prozac on those he treats. Kramer thoughtfully wrestles with some difficult issues associated with those who use Prozac to feel “better,” though they may not meet normal diagnostic criteria for depression.

Sacks, O. (1987). Awakenings. New York: Harper-Collins. Sacks describes his work with patients suffering from a severe neurological disorder. With the use of the drug L-Dopa, these patients, previously considered hopeless cases, experienced radical, although temporary, changes. Robin Williams starred in a movie of the same name, based on actual events.

Vitkus, J. (1996). Casebook in abnormal psychology. New York: McGraw-Hill. A well-written, engaging collection of nineteen clinical cases, using a variety of different theoretical approaches. Each case provides an extensive discussion of the issues involved, as well as an honest appraisal of the long-term prognosis for improvement. Unlike many books of this type, it also contains an extensive, up-to-date reference list.

Wolpe, J. (1990). The practice of behavior therapy. New York: Pergamon. A recent description of current behaviorally oriented approaches to therapy, from one of the leading scholars in the area.

Yalom, I. D. (1989). Love’s executioner, and other tales of psychotherapy. New York: Basic Books. Includes ten fascinating vignettes, each focusing on therapy with a different client. Readers will discover what therapy is like and how it affects the therapist as well as the client.
