Ave Maria

Josquin Desprez (ca. 1440-1521)

Ave Maria...virgo serena

CD 1, Tracks 50-52

Josquin's Ave Maria opens with the following text: Ava maria gratia plena dominus tecum, virgo serena. (Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee serene Virgin). Adapted from a Gregorian chant, the opening phrases are characterized by successive imitation of the soprano voice by the alto, tenor, and then bass. Polyphonic imitation was a common technique in motets of the period. Josquin varies the musical texture with passages for two, three, or four simultaneous voices. Note the brief pause at the end which is followed by a moment of intense emotion during which Josquin expresses a plea to the Virgin: O mater Dei, memento mei. Amen." (O Mother of God, remember me. Amen.)
