23)
(Late evening outside the Commandant's palace in Seville. Don Giovanni, concealing his identity, has stolen into Donna Anna's room for an amourous adventure. Leporello paces back and forth.)

Leporello
:15 Notte e giorno faticar, Night and day I slave
Per chi nulla sa gradir; For one who does not appreciate it.
Piova e vento sopportar, I put up with wind and rain,
Mangiar male e mal dormir! Eat and sleep badly.
Voglio far il gentiluomo, I want to be a gentleman
E non voglio più servir, And not serve anymore.
No, no, no, no, no, no, No, no, no, no, no, no,
Non voglio più servir! Not serve anymore.
:47 O che caro galantuomo! Oh, what a fine gentleman!
Voi star dentro colla bella You stay inside with your lady
Ed io far la sentinella! And I must play the sentinel!
1:05    Voglio far il gentiluomo, ecc. Oh, what a fine gentleman, etc.
Ma mi par che venga gente... But I think someone is coming!
Non mi voglio far sentir, ecc. I don't want them to hear me, etc.

(Leporello hides to one side. Don Giovanni and Donna Anna come down the palace stairs struggling. The Don hides his face to prevent her from recognizing him.)

Donna Anna
1:46 Non sperar, se non m'uccidi. There's no hope, unless you kill me
Ch'io ti lasci fuggir mai! That I'll ever let you go!
Don Giovanni
1:52 Donna folle, indarno gridi: Idiot! You scream in vain.
Chi son io tu non saprai. Who I am you'll never know!
Donna Anna
1:57 Non sperar, ecc. There's no hope, etc.
Don Giovanni
  Donna folle!, ecc. Idiot! etc.
Leporello
Che tumulto! Oh ciel, che gridi! What a racket! Heaven, what screams!
Il padron in nuovi guai. My master in another scrape.
Donna Anna
2:06 Gente! Servi! Al traditore! Help! Everyone! Seize the betrayer!
Don Giovanni
2:09 Taci, e trema al mio furore! Keep quiet! Beware my wrath!
Donna Anna
2:12 Scellerato! Scoundrel!
Don Giovanni
2:13 Sconsigliata! Fool!
Donna Anna
2:15 Scellerato! Scoundrel!
Don Giovanni
  Sconsigliata! Fool!
Leporello
2:17 Sta a veder che il malandrino We will see if this rascal
Mi farà precipitar. Will be the ruin of me!
Donna Anna
  Gente! Servi! Help! Everyone!
Don Giovanni
  Taci, e trema! Keep quiet!
Donna Anna
Come furia disperata Like a desperate fury
Ti saprò perseguitar! ecc. I'll know how to pursue you! etc.
Scellerato! Gente! Servi! Scoundrel! Help! Everyone!
Come furia disperata, ecc. Like a desperate fury, etc.
Don Giovanni
Questa furia disperata This desperate fury
Mi vuol far precipitar! ecc. Is aimed at destroying me!
Sconsigliata! Taci, e trema! Fool! Keep quiet!
Questa furia disperata, ecc. This desperate fury, etc.
Leporello
Che tumulto! Oh ceil, che gridi! What a racket! Heavens, what screams!
Sta a veder che il malandrino, ecc. We will see if this rascal, etc.

(Donna Anna hears the Commandant; she leaves Don Giovanni and goes into the house. The Commandant appears.)

24)
Commandant
:08 Lascila, indegno! Battiti meco! Leave her alone, wretch, and defend yourself.
Don Giovanni
:12 Va, non mi degno di pugnar teco. Go away! I disdain to fight with you.
Commandant
:17 Così pretendi da me fuggir? Thus you think to escape me?
Leporello
:22 Potessi almeno di qua partir. If I could only get out of here!
Don Giovanni
Va, non mi degno, no! Go away! I disdain you!
Commandant
:26 Così pretendi da me fuggir? Thus you think to escape me?
Leporello
:31 Potessi almeno di qua partir! If I could only get out of here!
Commandant
  Battiti! Fight!
Don Giovanni
Misero! Attendi, se vuoi morir! So be it, if you want to die!

(They duel. The Commandant is fatally wounded.)

25)
Commandant
:04 Ah, soccorso! son tradito! Help! I've been betrayed!
L'assassino m'ha ferito, The assassin has wounded me!
E dal seno palpitante And from my heaving breast
Sento l'anima partir. I feel my soul escaping!
Don Giovanni
Ah! già cade il sciagurato! Ah, already the wretch has fallen,
affannosa e agonizzante And he gasps for air.
Già dal seno palpitante From his heaving breast I already
Veggo l'anima partir, ecc. See his soul escaping, etc.
Leporello
Qual misfatto! Qual eccesso! What a misdeed! What a crime!
Entro il sen dallo spavento I can feel my heart
Palpitar il cor mi sento! Beating hard from fright!
Io non sò che far, che dir, ecc. I don't know what to do or say, etc.
26)
Don Giovanni
Leporello, ove sei? Leporello, where are you?
Leporello
Son qui, per mia disgrazia. E voi? I'm here, unfortunately, and you?
Don Giovanni
:04 Son qui. Over here.
Leporello
Chi è morto, voi, o il vecchio? Who's dead, you or the old man?
Don Giovanni
:06 Che domanda da bestia! Il vecchio. What an idiotic question! The old man.
Leporello
Bravo! Due imprese leggiadre! Well done! Two foul deeds!
Storzar la figlia, ed ammazzar il padre! First, you raped the daughter then murdered the father!
Don Giovanni
:11 L'ha voluto, suo danno. He asked for it; too bad for him.
Leporello
Ma Donn' Anna cosa ha voluto? And Donna Anna, did she ask for it too?
Don Giovanni
:15 Taci, non mi seccar! Keep quiet and don't bother me.
Vien meco, se non vuoi qualche cosa ancor tu. Now come along, unless you're anxious for something for yourself.
Leporello
Non vo' nulla, signor, non parlo più. I have no desires, sir, and no more to say.
