CD 3, Tracks 7-14
Die Walküre (The Valkyrie) is the second of the four music dramas which make up Wagner's famous work, Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelung). In Act I Sieglinde and Siegmund meet and fall in love, not knowing that they are brother and sister (in fact, twins). Specifically, the excerpt focuses on the moment the twins come to realize their likeness to one another and eventually, the fact they are brother and sister. After Siglinde gives Sigmund his new name (he was previously known as Wehwalt), Siegmund withdraws a magic sword from a tree which had been placed there by Wotan, king of the Gods. The intense emotion of the scene culminates when the two characters embrace in incestious love.
