Updating an Opinion Poll

Written Assignment

The ultimate goal of the exercise is to write a brief paper on the experience of playing the game and exploring the linked resources. Some sample guidelines have been provided for instructors.

After taking the simulation poll and studying polling techniques, students may wish to further investigate polling analysis and polling data on the internet or in the library.

Each student (or team of students) should write a paper answering the following questions:

  1. How do the ways in which questions are asked, as well as their order, relate to poll results, and what general rules about polling do each of these conclusions imply?
  2. How does the known subset of the poll and sample adequacy affect the poll results?
  3. What are the purposes of political polling by large, independent organizations, as opposed to daily polling by candidates running for office?
  4. What are some of the important issues surrounding the use of biased polling methods to support a political agenda?
  5. What are some of the problems with the reliability of Internet polls?
  6. How might the 1992 election recreation experience influence your perspective on the year 2000 elections?
