CD-ROM Walkthrough

Available in both IBM and Macintosh platforms, the new CD-ROM that accompanies Motivos de conversación provides students with additional practice in each of three main areas of their study of Spanish: vocabulary grammar, and communication.

A CD-ROM icon that appears repeatedly in each chapter of the Motivos de conversación textbook reminds students that additional practice exercises are found in the CD-ROM.

The CD-ROM reproduces vocabulary displays from each of the regular chapters in formats that help bind meanings to the new words students are learning. They have the opportunity to listen to words from the main text, to match visual representations of these words to the words themselves, and to write the words. As the program only accepts correct responses, students are able to monitor their own performance.

Engaging activities like this one reinforce the structures that students study in each chapter.

In this "concentration"-style game, which practices both vocabulary and grammar, students are asked to match the descriptions with images. When they do so correctly, both "cards disappear, providing students with immediate feedback.

When the activity has been successfully completed, all images and their corresponding descriptions are displayed together.

Communications activities, such as this one in Lesson 13, give students an opportunity to record a "conversation" with one of the characters from the Motivos de conversación video– a native speaker– and then play it back so that they can compare their pronunciation with the native speaker’s. Here again, students encounter integrated elements of the Motivos de conversación program in a format that serves to further develop major language skills.

For students who want further practice, the electronic link to the McGraw-Hill Electronic Tutor (MHELT) on the Main Menu page allows them to access most of the form-focused vocabulary and grammar activities from the main text. Links on both the Main Menu and Activity pages lead them to the Motivos de conversación web site on the World Wide Web. And from the Activity Menu page and the activity pages, they can also click on other helpful features of this CD-ROM: a dictionary of terms used on the CD-ROM, and helpful verb summaries.

Students can further reinforce their language learning by checking their responses to CD-ROM activities in the ReportViewer. The ReportViewer also allows the results to be sent to the instructor via e-mail.

The attractive and well-designed activities, the multiple opportunities for feedback, the multimedia capacity, and the integration of the main text and its ancillaries will engage students and develop their skills.
