What’s New in the Third Edition?

The third edition of this ground-breaking text presents the following innovations:

NEW Student CD-ROM! Using the literary reading from the Vistazos section in each chapter of the textbook as its starting point, the CD-ROM offers interactive activities on language, history, geography, biographies, and additional cultural information not found in the main text.

NEW Video! The new video presents heritage speaker interviews that are also integrated within the Los hispanos hablan sections in the textbook. The text contains pre-viewing and post-viewing activities for each segment. The audio portions of these interviews may also be heard on the Student Tape or CD that accompanies the student text.

NEW Web site! Also within the Vistazos section of the textbook, Navegando la red encourages students to explore the World Wide Web to seek information about the Hispanic world related to each lesson theme. Students may begin their search for information on the ¿Sabías que… ? Web site at www.spanish.mhhe.com. The Web site also offers a host of resources for students and instructors alike.

NEW Electronic Manual! This interactive workbook/laboratory manual, based on the standard print version of the Manual que acompaña ¿Sabías que… ?, offers an interactive experience to further enhance students’ language learning.

NEW Audio CDs! The new audio CDs to accompany the Manual provide further listening comprehension practice outside of the classroom in an easy-to-use format.

In response to instructor feedback on the second edition, we have made the following content changes in the third edition:

• Longer readings in the third lesson of each unit have been shortened and/or simplified when possible.
• The main reading and a number of activities in Lección 12: ¿En qué consiste el abuso? have been replaced to broaden the scope of the content. The focus is now on addiction to exercise in general and not just specifically on jogging.
• Unidad 5: Somos lo que somos has been revised substantially. Internal lesson segments have been shortened and the title, readings, and content of Lección 15 have been replaced or modified. The new focus and lesson title is now ¿Es el ser humano otro animal? Due to extensive reviewer feedback, we have removed the two elephant readings in favor of one that explores how language makes humans unique among other living beings on this planet.
• New optional, lesson-ending communicative activities En tu opinión, Observaciones, and Situaciones bring real-life discussion into the classroom setting.
• The Vistazos sections have been restructured and now contain two activities, one focusing on a literary piece or fragment and the other on Los hispanos hablan, which can also be seen on the video to accompany ¿Sabías que… ?
