Selection Interview: Study Questions

Previous sections of this website have provided study questions related to the selection interview.  The following questions pertain only to the actual interview and not to preparation issues covered in other sections (e.g., preparing a resume, preparing an interview guide, etc.).  Your instructor may assign you to answer one or more of these questions.  If the questions are not assigned, you can still use them to check your understanding of the material.  Information needed to answer these questions can be found in Chapters 8 and 9.

Questions for Chapter 8

  1. Discuss reasons why the opening of a selection interview is so important.
  2. What are some of the nontraditional interviewing approaches identified in the text?   Why do you think these approaches are being used?
  3. How can you build rapport with the interviewee?
  4. Why is the opening question important?  What are some recommendations for the opening question?
  5. What types of information should you be prepared to provide the applicant?
  6. Why is it important to ask the applicant what they already know about the organization and position?
  7. What are some things that should be accomplished in the closing of the interview?

  1. What are some things you can do to learn more about the selection interview process for the particular company you are applying to?
  2. What are the three questions interviewers typically have in mind during a selection interview?
  3. What does the Hughes Aircraft pyramid tell us about the characteristics employers look for in employees?
  4. What are some things you should do to create a favorable first impression?
  5. What do successful applicants do when answering questions during a selection interview?
  6. Why do illegal questions pose a risk for interviewees?
  7. What are the different techniques for responding to illegal questions?
  8. Why is it important for you to ask questions of the interviewer during a selection interview?
  9. Discuss strategies for preparing an interview schedule when you are the interviewee.
  10. What are some questions you should consider when evaluating and following up an interview?
