C H A P T E R Coming Up. . . In Section 3.5, we are going to learn how to write a linear equation that models the average price of a movie ticket given that the average price of a movie ticket in the United States in 1996 was $4.42 and the average price of a movie ticket in the United States in 2010 was $7.89. (Source: http:// www.natoonline.org/statisticstickets.htm) Linear Equations in Two Variables Commitment and Perseverance Commitment and perseverance are necessary to be successful in any college classroom. Some courses may require more commitment and perseverance than others, especially if you find the material somewhat difficult to conquer. Your willingness to stick to your goals is far more important than your mathematical abilities. We truly believe that, given the right resources and the right amount of time, you can pass this class. You cannot compare yourself to other students in the classroom since college brings together students of all backgrounds—some may have seen the material last year, some 5 years ago, and some may never have seen the material. So do not get frustrated when others seem to learn the concepts faster than you. This does not mean that you will not learn them; it just means you need to have a little more perseverance until you do. When we believe we can do something and believe that what we are doing is important, we will be committed to doing it. Know that what you are doing in the classroom is important. It is one step in achieving your college education. Try to remember the big picture as you take these small steps to reach your goal. Find a person that is supportive of your goals and allow them to hold you to the commitment of being successful in this class. Question For Thought: How would you evaluate your ability to see things through to the end? Do you typically give up on your commitments or do you see them through to the end?
