The Rules of Exponents and Polynomials CHAPTER10 10 Math at Work: Lab Technician Emily Harrington believes there’s no need to take a trip to the mountains or to walk along the beach to fi nd a beautiful view. For her, nothing can compare to what you see when you look into a microscope. “I think the tiny structures that make up our world are beautiful and fascinating,” Emily says. “You never know what you’ll fi nd when you lean over the microscope to study a new sample.” As a lab technician at a health clinic, Emily’s job is to analyze blood and other biological material to assess the health of patients and determine the causes of sickness. It requires her both to carry out sophisticated tests in the lab and then to be able to analyze the results of her work. She needs knowledge she has built up over many years to perform her duties. “Lots of different skills go into doing my job,” Emily describes. “Whenever I run a test, I have to think back to my training in biology, in math, and in using our lab’s equipment.” In high school, Emily struggled with math, but with hard work and the right study skills, she succeeded in college math courses. “First, I had to master the fundamental skills of math,” says Emily. “That knowledge formed the foundation for comfortably using math ranging from fractions to equations and algebra every day in my work.” In this chapter, we learn the rules of exponents and how to perform operations with polynomials. We also cover skills that will help you improve your memory so that you can remember what you’ve learned in this course, and in all your courses, for years to come. 765 OUTLINE Study Strategies: Improving Your Memory 10.1 The Product Rule and Power Rules 10.2 Integer Exponents and the Quotient Rule Putting It All Together 10.3 Scientific Notation 10.4 Adding and Subtracting Polynomials 10.5 Multiplying Polynomials Group Activity emPOWERme: What’s Your Memory Style?
