Each square inside this rectangle has a length and width of 1 foot. The area of each square is 1 square foot. This can be abbreviated as 1 ft2. How many squares are inside this rectangular rug? There are 40 squares. Therefore, the area of the rectangular rug is 40 square feet or 40 ft2. We can also fi nd the area of a rectangle by multiplying its length and width. Formula Area of a Rectangle We can fi nd the area, A, of a rectangle using this formula: Area length width or A lw l 5 length w 5 width The units for area are square units like square feet (ft2), square inches (in2), square meters (m2), etc. We can apply the area formula to fi nd the area of the rug: A lw (8 ft)(5 ft) 40 ft2. Find the area of the rectangle. 22 in. 15 in. Solution Identify the length and width: l 22 in., w 15 in. Use the formula A lw. A lw A (22 in.)(15 in.) Substitute the values for l and w. A 330 in2 Multiply. The area of the rectangle is 330 in2. EXAMPLE 2 YOU TRY 2 Find the area of the rectangle. 11 yd 17 yd 296 CHAPTER 4 Basic Geometry Concepts and Algebra www.mhhe.com/messersmith
