4.5 Solving Geometry Applications Using Algebra What are your objectives for Section 4.5? How can you accomplish each objective? 1 Solve for the Unknown Value • Solve for an unknown value in a formula. • Complete the given examples on your own. • Complete You Trys 1 and 2. 2 Solve Applications Involving Geometry • Review the geometry formulas and relationships in this chapter. • Use the Five Steps for Solving Applied Problems to complete the given examples on your own. • Complete You Trys 3–5. Read the explanations, follow the examples, take notes, and complete the You Trys. We can combine geometry formulas with what we know about solving equations to solve for an unknown value. 1 Solve for the Unknown Value The formula for the area of a triangle is A 1 2 bh. If A 42 cm when b 12 cm, fi nd the height, h. Solution Substitute the known values for A and b. Then, solve for the height, h. (We will not include the units when we substitute the values. But, don’t forget to write the correct units in the answer!) A 1 2 bh 42 1 2 (12)h Substitute the values for A and b. 42 6h Multiply. 42 6 6h 6 Divide each side by 6. 7 h Simplify. The height, h, is 7 cm. EXAMPLE 1 If necessary, review Chapter 2 on solving equations. www.mhhe.com/messersmith SECTION 4.5 Solving Geometry Applications Using Algebra 333
